Open any app store, search “loan,” and you’ll see the same two words over and over. 0% interest. First-time borrowers, no fees, money in five minutes, all you need is one ID.

It’s a good trick. It works because it’s technically true, and technically true is the most dangerous kind of lie.

Where the money actually hides

Here’s how a real one works, using a lending app’s own published example.

You borrow ₱10,000. The “interest” is zero, exactly as promised. But there’s a processing fee, a service fee, maybe a “convenience” fee, and they come off the top — so the money that actually lands in your GCash is ₱8,000, not ₱10,000. A week later, you repay the full ₱10,000.

Do the plain arithmetic. You paid ₱2,000 to use ₱8,000 for one week. That’s a 25% cost in seven days. Annualize that and the number is so large it stops looking like a percentage and starts looking like a typo. And the headline still says, with a straight face, 0% interest — because the ₱2,000 was never called interest. It was called a fee.

This is the whole game. The word “interest” is regulated and disclosed. The word “fee” is where they put the actual price. Move the cost from one column to the other and you can advertise zero while charging more than a loan shark.

“Included in the total cost” is not your friend

The newer, slicker apps don’t even bother hiding the fees in separate lines. They roll everything into one number and tell you it’s simpler that way.

One popular app’s own example: borrow ₱20,000, pay it back over six months at ₱5,000 a month. Add it up. That’s ₱30,000 repaid on ₱20,000 borrowed — ₱10,000 to rent twenty for half a year. “All applicable fees included,” the listing says, as if bundling the cost into one tidy figure were a courtesy instead of a way to keep you from doing the division.

They’re not wrong that it’s disclosed. The total is there, if you read it. They’re counting on you not reading it, because you’re not in that app to study finance. You’re in that app because rent is due Friday and the salary doesn’t reach.

The trap isn’t the first loan. It’s the second.

Here’s the part the “0% for first-time borrowers” line is really designed to do.

The first loan often is cheap, or even genuinely free. That’s not generosity. It’s customer acquisition. They’re paying to find out one thing: are you the kind of person who needs to borrow ₱8,000 to get to payday? Because if you are, you’ll be back. And the second loan is full price. So is the third.

The squeeze that made you borrow once does not fix itself in a month. It usually gets worse, because now there’s a repayment coming out of next month’s already-short salary. So you borrow again to cover the gap the repayment made. That’s not a loan anymore. That’s a spiral, and the “0% interest” sign at the front door is what got you to walk in.

What to actually do with this

You don’t need to memorize regulations. You need one habit: before you borrow anything, find the total you’ll repay, subtract what actually hits your account, and look at that difference as a price. Not a fee, not a rate — a price, in pesos, for renting money. Then ask if it’s worth it. Sometimes, in a true emergency, it is. Most of the time, seen plainly, it isn’t.

The apps have one advantage over you, and it isn’t intelligence. It’s that they’ve done the math and they’re betting you won’t. Do the math. It’s the cheapest thing in the whole transaction, and it’s free.

If you only read the headlines, you’d think the question was settled.

The Philippine outsourcing industry — the one that employs close to two million people and brings in around $42 billion a year — has spent the last year repeating a calm, confident line: AI is creating more jobs than it takes. The numbers they show back it up. Headcount went up, not down. Revenue per worker climbed. The industry groups have even named the new roles AI is supposedly minting: prompt engineers, AI trainers, quality controllers, data annotators.

It’s a reassuring story. It’s also not the whole one — and the part they leave out is the part that actually matters to you.

Two true headlines, one missing story

Here’s the same year from a different desk.

A Filipino freelance writer watches the writing category on Upwork shrink by nearly a third in a single year — the steepest fall of any category on the platform. A single entry-level posting now pulls more than fifty applicants. Plenty of clients post jobs and never hire anyone at all, because they’re testing whether the AI can just do it instead. Content writing for small businesses, once a dependable Filipino raket, has mostly evaporated.

Both of these are true at the same time. The industry’s “we’re adding jobs” and the freelancer’s “my work disappeared” are not in contradiction. They’re describing two ends of the same machine.

Because AI isn’t really deleting Filipino work. It’s re-pricing it. Some skills are suddenly worth far more. Others are suddenly worth almost nothing. And the comfortable middle — the generalist work that paid a steady wage for steady competence — is the part being squeezed out fastest.

The split, in plain numbers

Look at what’s rising and what’s falling, and the pattern is hard to miss.

Falling: data entry, basic graphic design, generic copywriting, routine call-handling. The common thread isn’t “creative” or “technical.” It’s replaceable — work where the task is predictable enough that a machine can do a passable version, so the price collapses toward zero.

Rising: AI integration, data annotation and labeling, specialized analytics, the kind of video and technical work where human judgment still beats the machine. On the freelance side, the platforms report AI-related skills climbing while the generic categories sink. Inside the BPO towers, the same story wears a corporate suit — the routine voice roles carry the highest displacement risk, while the “AI-assisted” specialist roles are where the new pay is. One industry estimate puts only a small slice of the BPO workforce at high displacement risk right now — but “right now” is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and the slice grows every year you stand still.

The reassuring version and the frightening version are both real. What neither tells you is the thing worth knowing: there’s a line being drawn through the Filipino working world, and it doesn’t run between “safe industries” and “doomed industries.” It runs between replaceable and hard-to-replace — and it cuts straight through the middle of almost every job and raket there is.

Which side of the line

This is where it stops being news and starts being personal.

The mistake is to ask “is my industry safe?” The BPO sector is booming and still shedding routine roles. Freelancing is brutal for beginners and lucrative for specialists. The industry isn’t the unit that lives or dies. The task is. Two people with the same job title can be on opposite sides of the line, depending on what exactly they do all day and whether a machine can already do a cheap version of it.

So the more honest question — the raketista question — is smaller and harder: which parts of what I do are replaceable, and which parts are mine? The work where you exercise judgment, handle the messy exception, build the relationship, make the call the machine can’t — that’s the part holding its price. The work you do on autopilot is the part being re-priced toward zero, whether you’ve noticed yet or not.

None of this means panic. The annotation jobs are real. The specialist rates are climbing. The video work is up. There is more high-value work, not less — it’s just landing in different hands than before, and the hands it’s landing in belong to people who saw the line coming and moved across it on purpose.

What this is, underneath

Strip away the BPO press releases and the freelancer horror stories and what’s left is plain. The rules of Filipino earning are being rewritten in real time, not by erasing jobs but by quietly changing what they’re worth. The people who’ll do well aren’t the ones in the “right” industry. They’re the ones who looked honestly at their own work, found the replaceable parts, and got busy becoming hard to replace — before the re-pricing reached them.

That’s the whole game now. Not “will AI take my job,” but “which half of my job is already on the wrong side of the line, and what am I going to do about it this year.”

There’s a particular kind of quiet that happens around the 20th of the month.

The salary landed two weeks ago. It was real money. You’re not careless with it, and you’re not lazy — you’ve never been lazy a day in your life. The rest of us just notice that the money runs out faster and wonder what we did wrong.

The answer is: probably nothing. A salary that comfortably covered a household in 2019 can leave that same household short in 2026, with no change in spending and no new bad habit to blame. The ground moved. You’re standing where you always stood.

And for a lot of people, the gap doesn’t just sit there politely. It gets filled — by a loan app that approves you in four minutes, by a credit card’s minimum payment, by borrowing a little from next month to finish this one. None of these are signs of a weak character. They’re what a reasonable person reaches for when the math doesn’t close and the rent is due. The trouble is that some of those tools are built to make the gap wider, not smaller. We’ll spend a lot of time on those in the months ahead, because they’re the quiet reason a squeeze becomes a spiral.

Why “just spend less” stops working

The usual advice arrives right about now: cut back, budget harder, skip the milk tea.

Sometimes that’s fair. There’s almost always something to trim. But tell it to someone whose income genuinely no longer covers the basics, and you’ve said nothing useful at all. You can’t budget your way out of a gap that exists after the budgeting is done. At some point the problem isn’t the spending. It’s that there’s only one stream of money coming in, and it isn’t enough anymore.

That’s the uncomfortable part, and also, strangely, the freeing one. Because if the problem were really your discipline, the fix would be to become a different, more disciplined person — which is hard, slow, and a little insulting. But if the problem is the structure — one income, rising costs — then the fix is structural too. And structures can be changed.

The squeeze is a problem you can work

Point it at the boring stuff instead. The work around the work. The first draft of a proposal you’ll rewrite anyway. The client email you’ve sent a hundred versions of. The product descriptions, the captions, the summary of a long thread, the rough cut you’ll polish by hand. None of that is your craft. All of it is time. A raket isn’t just the skill — it’s the hour of admin around every hour of skill, and that admin is exactly what the machine is good at.

A freelancer who used to spend a full day on a deliverable and three more days on proposals, follow-ups, and formatting can now spend the day on the deliverable and an afternoon on the rest. That’s not a small gain. That’s a second client’s worth of time, found inside the same week.

Charge for the result, not the hours

This is where it gets uncomfortable for some people, so let’s say it plainly.

If AI lets you do in two hours what used to take eight, the temptation is to feel guilty and lower your price. Don’t. Your client isn’t paying for your suffering — they’re paying for the result. If the result is as good or better and arrives faster, that’s worth more, not less. The freelancers who’ll struggle are the ones who price by the hour and then automate their own hours away. The ones who’ll thrive price by the outcome, use the tool to hit it faster, and keep the difference.

That shift — from selling time to selling outcomes — was smart before AI. Now it’s survival. The machine makes hours cheap. It can’t make judgment cheap, and judgment is what you’re actually selling.

The new baseline skill
